San Diego, Texas: Hortensia G. Serna 85 years of age of San Diego, Texas passed away at her residence on Monday, April 12, 2021 surrounded by her family. She was born in San Diego on April 24, 1935 to Vidal and Isaura Garcia who preceded her in death as well as her in-laws Raul and Ofelia S. Serna, her husband Raul Serna, and her brother and wife Cimitrio and Aurora G. Ramirez, her brothers-in-law Homero Serna, and Luis Alfonso Garcia, nephew Ricardo R. Ramirez. Hortensia is survived by her daughter Imelda S. Garcia and grandson Victor (Audra) Garcia, her caregiver Olivia Arredondo, sister Enriqueta Garcia, a niece Cynthia Ramirez, sister-in- law Gloria V. Serna, along with other cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Her education started at the San Diego Schools moving on to Our Lady of the Lake High School and completing a bachelor's degree at Our Lady of the Lake College in 1956. Hortensia worked for her Dad as a bookkeeper at an early age; became a teacher at San Diego Junior High and in 1966 became San Diego I.S.D. librarian until her retirement in 1990. The following school year she joined Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco I.S.D. providing library services at their three campuses. The next year she started library services at La Gloria I.S.D. ending her career in 2010. Hortensia was a member of P.T.A., T.S.T.A., / T.E.A., Beta Pi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, Duval County San Diego Library Board, and the Duval County Historical Commission. Active Pallbearers: Luciano Salazar, Victor Garcia, Fernando Arredondo, Luis Serna, Robert Crider, Derrick Gibson. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at 8:30 a.m. at Mauro P. Garcia Funeral Home in San Diego. Rosary will be recited at 10:00 a.m. that same morning at St. Francis De Paula Catholic Church followed by the Funeral Mass. Burial will follow at the San Diego Cemetery. Mauro P. Garcia Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements. Due to Covid-19 Pandemic we ask that everyone continue to wear a mask and social distance at the funeral home, church, and cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
