My grandma Dolores made me feel important, made me feel seen. She would talk to me with interest - asking me about what I did, who I knew, and what I thought. My grandma and I shared a number of interests - from a love of Elvis to an admiration of The Big Apple. I loved hearing her stories of growing up in South Texas, about her trip to NYC after graduating high school, and her love of Whataburger. I loved gifting her Whataburger swag and she would often tell me how she had been visiting the Alice location for over 50 years! My grandma was so smart and clever. I admired her work as a teacher and as a mother of so many children. I’ll always remember how she’d let me watch cartoons in her room on her huge bed when I was just a little girl. I’m so grateful my mom will take me along with her when we would visit San Diego. I love her very much and miss her dearly. May she rest in peace.
